Downfield Junior Football Club are holding a Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday in the club’s recently-renovated function suite.
Inductees on the night will include Willie and George Grier, who were at the helm of the ultra-successful Spiders side in the 80s.
This is a great move by the Spiders committee and it shows just how highly-regarded they are by the Balgowan Avenue-based club.
Of course, the brothers were also in charge of Lochee United when they had their great spell a few decades ago.
Around 10 years ago, a tribute dinner was held at Dundee’s Invercarse Hotel to mark the brothers’ 60 years of service to football in the city.
Of course, in their early years, they ran the very successful Lochee Boys Club, along with their late brother Lewis.
Speakers on Saturday evening are former Dunfermline manager Jim Leishman and ex-referee John Rowbotham.
Tickets cost £25 and can be obtained from club president Alex Duncan on 07505 736928.
Alex is also keen to hear from anyone who would like to suggest names for other inductees to be considered.
* A FOOTBALL quiz question which keeps cropping up is . . . “Which ground hosted the first-ever European Cup game in Glasgow?”
Most punters would go with either Hampden, Ibrox or Parkhead. However, the answer is Firhill.
“When did Partick Thistle win the league to qualify for the European Cup?” I hear the masses asking.
The Jags were not involved when their ground hosted a tie on November 23, 1955 — the inaugural year of the competition — but Hibs were!
However, the fact the tie was played at Firhill was not instigated by the Edinburgh side, either.
Swedish side Djurgardens borrowed the Maryhill ground to play their home game as it was still the close season in Sweden.
Hibs won 3-1 with goals from Combe, Olson (og) and Mulkerrin after Ekland had given the ‘hosts’ an early lead.
Hibs also won the second leg — an Eddie Turnbull penalty gave them a 1-0 success — for a 4-1 aggregate victory.
The Easter Road side went all the way to the semi-final, losing to French side Rheims.
