We recently featured former Dundee coach Sammy Kean.
Kean, of course, was a former Hibs player and was No 2 to Bob Shankly in the Dark Blues’ famous championship season of 1961-62.
Brian Reynolds, of Tayport, said: “I remember Sammy Kean being in charge of Dundee in between Shankly leaving to take over Hibs and the appointment of Bobby Ancell, who came to Dens from Motherwell.
“Could BwB please highlight his record for that couple of games?
“The thing I mainly want to know is . . . was he in charge for Dundee’s incredible 7-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle in 1965?”
Kean took over the reins on Tuesday, February 23, 1965, and ran the team until April 1.
His first match in a six-game spell was that victory at Tynecastle.
Shankly’s last game in charge was a 1-0 defeat by Clyde at Shawfield.
It was widely thought at the time that Kean would ring the changes.
Instead, he fielded the same side which lost to the Bully Wee — Donaldson; Hamilton, Cox; Cousin, Easton, Stuart; Murray, Penman, Cameron, Cooke, Robertson.
Kenny Cameron and Andy Penman hit hat-tricks that afternoon, with Alan Cousin also netting.
His next five games, in order, were . . . a 2-1 home win over St Mirren, 3-3 draws against both Dunfermline (a) and Celtic (h), a 4-2 home defeat to Dundee United and a 4-4 draw with Partick Thistle at Firhill.
There was also a 6-0 success over Arbroath at Dens in a Forfarshire Cup tie.
An interesting aside to the Tynecastle victory is that it could be argued that crushing defeat cost the Jambos the title that season.
Hearts were runners-up to Kilmarnock that season, failing by a fraction of goal average — the method used at the time.
Another interesting stat from that season is that Andy Penman was the Dens Parkers’ top scorer with 33 goals, playing in the inside-right position.
Only two of these counters came from the penalty spot.
