Brian Christie remembers playing in the local hospital football league, as highlighted in our November 10 edition.
That was when Jim Anderson reminisced of his time playing with the Strathmartine Hospital side, in a division which contained others such as Liff, Murray Royal and Stracathro, in addition to his own team DRI.
“I remember Jim in that league and also we worked together for a spell in Ninewells,” said Brian, of Dundee.
The 68-year-old Belmuir Road resident continued: “I played for the DRI side, which was run by former Dundee United player Johnny Kerr.
“My brother Ian also played in that team, along with John Boyle.
“The names of other players escapes me at the moment.
“The league was good and competitive and there were also good ‘away’ trips up to Perth.
“You were well looked after, with meals after the match being laid on.”
Brian, who worked as a theatre porter, and was also employed for a time at Royal Victoria, went on: “Unlike Jim’s Strathmartine team, our DRI team didn’t have any guests.
“All our players were from the staff.”
Brian also played for the St Michael’s Secondary School football team on Saturday mornings and for St Columba’s Boys Club in the afternoon.
He revealed: “Alex McCarle has featured in BwB several times and he was a team-mate at St Michael’s.”
In the same November 10 issue was a photo of a Scotland international football team during a training session in 1960.
Brian concluded: “That is a great photo.
“There were five Rangers players in that team.
“I don’t think we’ll see that amount of Ibrox players in a Scotland team again.”
I agree with Brian that we probably won’t for a few years yet.
However, Rangers are a massive institution in football and I’m sure they will be back to full strength at some time in the future.
