Charlie Walker’s latest query concerns a fellow-Locheeite (is that the proper term?).
“Who was Lochee lad Jimmy Kyles playing for when he scored a hat-trick against Queen’s Park at Hampden Park?” he asked.
“His grandfather Paddy and I were great pals.
“Sadly, Paddy has passed on now.”
Jimmy scored all three goals for Forfar Athletic in their 3-1 win over the Spiders at Hampden on September 18, 1974.
Forfar lined up that day — Milne; Albrecht, Ritchie; Taylor, Hopcroft, Lowe (Bojczuk); Cooper, Phinn, Kyles, Harrow, Grimmond.
Has there been any other Dundonians who have scored a senior-hat-trick at Hampden?”
* A question at a recent quiz asked: “Which Scottish team has an elephant on their club badge?”
Answer — Dumbarton.
I was then asked by a quizgoer what the significance of this was.
My take on it is that it is an elephant and castle on the Sons badge.
Dumbarton Castle is situated on a rock and many locals reckon the rock is in the shape of an elephant.
However, if anyone else has any other theories on this I would be happy to share them with BwB readers.
* Our September 29 edition of BwB featured a mistake, and Bill Grant was quick to pick up on this.
“Your September 29 edition showed two photos of Dundee United,” said Bill, who lives in Broughty Ferry.
“One was in their white strip and the other in their all-black strip.
“In the white strip picture, the player at the back immediate left is listed as Bert Howieson.
“The player is, in fact, Alec Gordon. Gordon was a full-back signed by Jerry Kerr from Armadale Thistle.
“Howieson was a deep-lying centre-forward that Kerr signed from Leeds United.
“Keep up the good work as I love reading these stories.”
