Andy Smith, of Dura Street, Dundee, asks who supplied the opposition in testimonials for three Dundee United players.
The Tannadice players in question are Doug Smith, Dennis Gillespie and Doug Wilkie.
Gillespie was the first of the trio to receive his testimonial and it came in 1973 in a 2-1 win against Dundee.
Dundee put out most of their first team for the game and also included former Dens Parkers Iain Phillip, Andy Penman and Alan Gilzean.
United’s side was more of a select of former team-mates and other Dundonians such as Mel Holden, Alex Bruce, Francis Munro and Ian Britton.
Smith’s testimonial saw United take on a Doug Smith Select, with Smith playing in his select side.
United won 5-4 and the select side included his former Danish team-mates Finn Dossing, Mogens Berg and legend Ron Yeats, who, of course, went on to skipper Liverpool.
Wilkie had to give up the game after being involved in the Invergowrie rail crash.
His game went ahead in 1981 and saw a West Select triumph 4-2 over an East Select.
* Edinburgh’s Kevin Dakers watched the Community Shield game as Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0, which kicked off the English Premier League season.
He noted: “It was mentioned how quick Arsenal’s Theo Walcott was but he doesn’t always produce a final ball.
“Theo should watch footage of the great Charlie Cooke, who played for Aberdeen, Dundee and Chelsea.
“What a player he was, one of my favourites.
“When people ask why I like football, my reply is ‘watch Charlie Cooke’.”
