Blether with Brown: Was Andy Matthew ‘The Coalman’?
ByJohn Brown
Billy Williamson, of Newport, said his dad was a Cowdenbeath fan and he always heard him referring to ‘The Coalman’ when discussing the team’s affairs with friends and relatives.
“Do you have any idea who this could be?” he asked.
I went back to Billy and asked what era and he replied it was the 60s and 70s.
The only one I can think of is Andy Matthew, who was appointed Cowdenbeath manager in early 1968.
In addition to being involved in football, he also had a coal merchant’s business in Kirkcaldy.
Andy was a former player at Central Park, spending five years with the club.
Indeed, he is one of a few merry band who have played for all four Fife senior clubs.
He was eight years with East Fife, and also played for Raith Rovers and Dunfermline for one season each.
Andy also played for Rangers and the photo above shows him (top) in an Ibrox team group.
