Cupar’s Maurice McKinnon wants to know the details of Don Revie stepping up from being a player for Leeds United to manager.
“I remember seeing him play for Leeds in a friendly against Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park many years ago,” said Maurice, who is retired from the building trade.
“He then went on to become a very successful manager with the Elland Road side.
“I think some of his great Leeds players were also on show in that Raith game.”
First to the friendly and Raith won 4-1 on October 10, 1960.
The players Maurice may be thinking of were Billy Bremner and Jack Charlton, who went on to form the backbone of Leeds invincible side of the 1970s.
Urquhart (2), Kelly and French netted for Rovers, with Cameron counting for Leeds.
Leeds lined up – Humphries; McGuggan, Hair; Cameron, Charlton, Goodwin; Bremner, Revie, McCole, Peyton, Murray.
Raith’s team was – Thorburn; Stevenson, Mochan; Spence, Polland, Leigh; Wallace, Kelly, French, Matthew, Urquhart.
Revie stepped up to player-manager some six months later in March 1961 following the resignation of manager Jack Taylor.
Leeds were deemed to be struggling in the old English Second Division at the time and it was not until 63-64 that they gained promotion to the top flight.
The rest, as they say, is history.
