Peter had asked for information on his football career and any other snippets. “I knew a James Houston from many years ago,” said Wilma, wife of former local referee Don Howey. “He was brought up alongside me in Hawkhill and his mum (May/Mary) was great friends with my mum (Meg). “I’m sure he died a number of years ago and he would have been around 89 years old now. “He had a brother Bert, who was a policeman. “The Jim I knew worked in Ninewells and lived in Menzieshill. “Many years ago when I worked in the Balgay Bar he used to come in. “I hope this helps Peter but I’m not sure if it is the same James Houston.” Don Howey was a very well-known junior referee in the 1960s and 70s. Unusually, he then made a dramatic switch to take over as manager of Blairgowrie. The appointment proved to be very successful as he enjoyed league title wins and cup successes as manager of The Berrypickers. Don’s participation in sport is now less active as he enjoys a committee position with the Dundee Western Domino League. This article originally appeared on the Evening Telegraph website.
