Ian Dickson has looked on previous BwB editions and seen many photos of local amateur, junior and senior sides.
Now he reckons it is time that junior side Kirriemuir Thistle are highlighted.
And, with Ian’s assistance, I’m happy to oblige.
However, before we do so, I reckon that Ian himself deserves to be highlighted as he held (or, indeed, still holds) a unique record.
With the town of Kirriemuir well known as the birthplace of Peter Pan author JM Barrie and iconic AC/DC frontman Bon Scott, it’s perhaps time to give plaudits to another — the aforementioned Ian Dickson, who has lived there all of his life.
Ian, who joined the Montrose from junior side Forfar Celtic, explained: “I was three seasons with the Montrose FC senior team in the 1960s and, after one game in particular, entered the Guinness Book of Records.
“I got an entry when I became the youngest player to score a hat-trick in Scottish football — 18 years and 215 days. It happened on October 22, 1966, in a 4-1 victory over Third Lanark at Cathkin Park.
“I’ve enclosed the certificate, which also highlights the fact it was on a debut in an away match in British football.
“I wonder if this record still stands?”
The Courier reported the game, in which Jimmy Kemp scored the other goal, and highlighted Ian’s treble and the fact it was his debut for the Angus side.
However, at that time, there was no mention of being the youngest-ever but they did report that the last player to score a hat-trick on his debut prior to Ian was Jim Baxter in his first game as an inside-left for Raith Rovers.
In his time in the juniors, Ian played for most of the regional select sides.
He also had a full-time offer from an English club and also trained with St Johnstone for four months and played in a game for the then Muirton Park side.
Ian pointed out that his Kirrie Thistle side won the Midlands Division One in 1973-74.
Ian is also pictured (above) in a Montrose FC team group from December 1967.
