Blether with Brown: Deserved Dave didn’t quite make it down the ‘loaby’

Our tale on June 2 about Jackie Knight’s time with Jordanhill in the Scottish Amateur Cup, including a losing final against Dundee side NCR, hit a chord with reader Dave Souter.

“That was a great story about Jackie Knight and NCR,” said Dundee FC fan Dave.

“I’ve got a better one, though.

“I attended Charleston Primary School in Dundee until 1968, then went to Harris Academy where Jackie was my register teacher as well as my PE teacher.

“He knew me and the few other Charleston kids well.

“One time, I had been cheeky to my mum.

“As I dashed out the kitchen, down the ‘loaby’, she threw the first thing she could reach at me.

“That just happened to be a fork, which left a four-prong mark on my back.

“Better that than the wooden scholes which she was also a great shot with.

“The following day, at gym time in Harris, Jackie, on seeing the marks, asked what happened.

“I told him the story and, as he also knew my mum, his comment was: ‘You must have deserved it’. Can’t see this happening today.”

Dave is pictured and points out the badges on his collar are of Dundee FC and Manchester City FC.

He continued: “They are both blue and have been under the yoke of Uniteds in the past 20-30 years, although City have peaked out from under that cloud in the last five years. I saw my first

Dundee game in 1964 against Real Zaragoza in the European Cup-Winners’ Cup.

“My mum’s cousins were the Duncans from Lochee, forever associated with Lochee Harp.

“My brothers Derek and Duncan have been associated with Dundee FC in the past.”
