Blether with Brown: Alec was a very popular player in junior circles

Dundee taxi driver Norrie Gallazzi is always urging me to find a photo of him in a successful football side.

At last, this one of Elmwood JFC has emerged from June 1973.

The Elmwood players are seen carrying captain Alex Baxter after they won the Courier Cup.

Alex scored the only goal in the final against Lochee United.

Norrie is pictured fifth from right in the back row of the photo.

Coincidentally – and rather poignantly – word just reached me yesterday that Alec McCarle, also a member of this team, had, sadly, passed away.

His friend John Leddie said: “I thought your Blether with Brown readers would like to know the very sad news that Alec McCarle passed away on Saturday.

“Alec was aged 68 but died after a brave but short fight against cancer.

“Alec was very well known in junior football through the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s, mainly with East Craigie and Elmwood.

“He was a very popular person with everybody he met.”

I can certainly vouch for that last line from John

as a beaming smile was always on show when I met Alec.

He was also a very good footballer, as many of his peers will acknowledge.

Alec is pictured fourth from right in the front row of the victorious Elmwood team.
