Neil Scally replied to Jimmy Stewart’s assertion that a Stobswell school football team “was a one-man team”.
Jimmy told the story of Peter Lorimer scoring all 10 goals in a 10-1 victory for his side.
I would have thought it was a fair and accurate statement given the facts but Neil is having none of it and hinted it was “disrespectful”.
“I also played for that Stobswell team,” said Neil. “St Francis were another of my clubs and I signed junior for Dundee North End at 15 years of age.
“There were many other talented players in that Stobswell team, namely Jim Finlayson, who went on to play for East Fife.
“We were a football team and goals which were scored by Peter Lorimer were all well set up by the other talented football players in the team.
“Jimmy’s comment was not really accurate and disrespectful towards the other Stobswell team members.”
Neil sent in a team photo of the Stobswell team (above) when Dundee FC captain Bobby Cox came to visit.
Back row (from left) — McEwan, McComiskie, Foster, Bobby Cox, Ewing, Peters, Johnston. Front row — Sampson, Scally, Lorimer, Finlayson, McNicoll.
Certainly, Jim Finlayson was a great goalscorer in his own right and was my team-mate at East Fife.
Drew Peters, now living in Canada, was also a very talented player at the time, while Jim McNicoll would go on to win the Scottish Juvenile Cup with Maryfield United, before then enjoying senior stints with Forfar and Montrose. He was also part of a very successful Carnoustie Panmure outfit in the junior leagues.
Can any BwB reader back up Neil with information on any of the other team members?
