Blether with Brown: Ralph’s transfer ‘accommodating’
ByJohn Brown
Our archives department was contacted by Alex MacKenzie, who wanted information on his `grandfather Ralph, who played for Dundee in the 1950s.
“I believe he was at Dundee from 1955-58. The history records I have all have the spelling ‘McKenzie’. Anything you would be able to dig up would be very much appreciated.”
Ralph MacKenzie was a centre-half and, after signing from Falkirk, made his debut for the Dens Park side on August 11, 1956, in a 1-0 League Cup win over Motherwell at Fir Park.
He rarely missed a game that season, ending up with 42 appearances. His final game was the first match of season 1958-59, when he turned out in a 3-2 home defeat by Partick Thistle in the League Cup.
All in all, he made 76 appearances in dark blue.
When he left Dens, manager Willie Thornton intimated he was sorry to see him go and said his waygoing was “accommodating”.
This was because Ralph was also keen to pursue a career in physical education in Aberdeen. He joined Highland League side Inverness Caledonian on leaving Dens.
Ralph is featured in this Dundee FC team group (above) from 1956-57.
