Blether with Brown: Alyth side of 1967 pretty successful

Mike Warden, of Blairgowrie, asked if we could show a couple of team groups of Alyth United Junior Football Club.

“I was brought up in Alyth and used to watch the junior team play when they were at home,” he said.

“Any of the teams from 1958 to 1980 would do.”

The photo far left is the Alyth United JFC side from September 1978.

Back row (from left) Alan Watson, Graham Edwards, Donald Percival, John Thors, Alan Driscoll, Brian Donnet, Peter Marshall.

Front row Mike O’Neil, Angus McGregor, John McGregor, Ross Edwards, Graeme Carlin, Danny Jeffries.

Immediate left is the team from June 1967.

Back row (from left) Warden, McCabe, Hood, Hendry, Robertson, Shields.

Front row Buttar, Reid, Sharp, Newton, Henderson.

I don’t think the 1978 team was successful in any great form but the 67 side certainly were.

That year saw them clinch the Angus Junior League title for the third season in a row.

They would also have picked up the Brechin Rosebowl around that time, the Forfar Businessmen’s Trophy and Perthshire Junior Cup.

Some of this team might have also tasted success a couple of times in the PA Cup a few seasons before.

If anyone has any memories of these successes, then tell us your tale.

If you’ve got a story to share with John, email: jbrown@dcthomson.co.uk.
