Blether with Brown: 1950s decade was really great time to grow up in Dundee

Blether with Brown: 1950s decade was really great time to grow up in Dundee

Ron Watson gave his take on the article involving Jimmy Croll.

“I remember going to training in Jimmy’s dad’s gym, which was a big shed in Strathmartine Road,” recalled Ron.

“I think it was next to the Vine pub.

“As youngsters, you went in the ring with Dave Croll, then, when you progressed, you went in with his brother Jimmy.

“I can tell you he had some left jab.

“His dad used to time the rounds with an alarm clock and it taught me how to defend myself.

“Having joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15, I boxed in the Scottish Championships at HMS Condor in the 1950s.

“Other boxers who used the gym were Jim Brady and Norrie Tennant.

“It was a great time to grow up in Dundee.

“Another place we used to go to was the old jail in Carnegie Street, where the weightlifter Jimmy Marra and wrestler George Kidd used to train.

“The reason I got to go to the boxing was through Jim Kelly’s dad (that’s Jim of Lochee Harp fame).

“Jim’s dad worked in the boatyard with Jimmy Croll’s dad.

“I now live in Newbigging, just up from Monifieth.”

“Is there anyone out there who also remember these great times?”

* “Thanks for the great article on Fintry football team a few weeks back,” said George Mather.

“We had a fair turnout on the night with 12 of the lads attending.

“Many thanks again.”

George organised a 40-year reunion of the Fintry primary school team, and it went ahead in Clark’s on North Lindsay Street in Dundee.
