Blether with Brown: USA beckoned for Dundee pool players

I don’t recall the sport of pool being mentioned in this column but, hey, I’m open to all sports.

George Gibson reckons pool is a better sport to watch than snooker, which he describes as boring.

“I remember about 1979-80-81, when, as a member of the Dundee Violet Football Club Social Club, I won the club pool singles trophy,” recalled George, of Kirk Street, Lochee.

“I was then put forward to compete against another 32 clubs in the Dundee and District area.

“The event was held in the Whitfield Labour Club and I was amazed to win £150 and a gigantic trophy.

“After that win, I never ever heard anything more about defending it.

“My mates and I also played in a Super League for Lochee.”

George, nicknamed ‘Coppers’, continued: “So it is with great nostalgia that I see a new form of pool coming through.

“Some of the characters from Lochee still speak about the great players from this pool era.

“I think pool is really under-rated these days.

“I hope as many teams and players as possible go ahead and continue to enjoy it.

“Watching good players at pool is quick and you do not get bored as quickly as watching snooker.

“I remember at least two players who went to America to play.

“I can’t remember their names or what happened to them.

“It would be interesting to find out.”
