Coincidentally, in the space of four days, I was asked what the origin of the football phrase “nutmeg” is?
First up was my 12-year-old grand-daugther Libby Forster, who plays for Monifieth Ladies U/13.
We have a deal whereby I give her £5 for every goal she scores this season.
As a defender, I thought her chances would be limited in the scoring stakes but she recently netted three in a two-game spell which left me rather light in the wallet department.
She said: “There was a nutmeg involved in my second goal.
“Why is it called a nutmeg when you put the ball through a player’s legs?”
Fast-forward a few days on and former Dundee United and Forfar Athletic player Kenny Dick asked me the same question.
Kenny, who qualified for his free bus pass well over a decade ago, it still refereeing in local minor football.
The answer to the question is… I just don’t know.
Something in the back of my mind tells me it is some form of ‘Cockney rhyming slang’ involving leg and nutmeg.
However, don’t take that as the definitive answer.
I’m sure a BwB reader will come up with a more potent theory.
