Last week’s BwB coverage of legendary Rangers manager Scot Symon prompted my colleague James Masson to relate a tale of the important role he played in the career of Harold Davis.
After an illustrious playing career with East Fife and Rangers, Harold became a coach, with Dundee being one of the teams he worked with.
The Korean War veteran, who was badly hurt in that conflict but recovered to play a major role in one of the best Rangers sides of all time, was born in Cupar but brought up in Perth.
James states: “Scot Symon signed Harold for both East Fife and Rangers and he knew exactly what he was getting.
“Like Scot, Harold spent his formative days in the Perth area juvenile league.
“In fact, aged 13, he turned out for Perth City Boys’ Club Minors before moving on to the PCBC City Boys’ team.
“From there it was on to Huntingtower Juveniles, a club that also included at one time Dave ‘Ginger’ Ewing, who skippered Manchester City to FA Cup success in 1956.
“A transfer to Newburgh juniors then took place and it was from the East Shore Park club that Scot signed Harold for East Fife and then Rangers.
“Although Scot has now passed on, Harold is still alive and living in Garelochhead. And he’s no doubt very grateful for the role Scot Symon played in his career.”
