Former St Michael’s Secondary School pupil Jim Thomson was able to name two out of the three ‘Unknowns’ in the football team photo on February 17.
“At the back second from left, next to Franny Munro, is Jim Stewart.
“Andy Maloney is second from left in the front row.”
However, Jim wasn’t able to give a name to the player who is far right in the back row.
Jim, who confessed he didn’t actually play football at the school, continued: “There is an interesting tale regarding Andy.
“He had a twin brother called Pat and he went to Lawside Academy.
“It was really strange seeing them line up against each other when the schools met on the football pitch.”
That must have come about as Pat passed his “Qually” (11-Plus Qualifying Exam) and Andy did not. Is the current education policy not such that it does not now allow siblings to be split up?
Kelly Ross was prompted to reply after reading a particular story.
“My family and I were recently interested in the ‘Christmas Day Truce Soldier’ article, which appeared on January 20.
“It was my gran who spotted it in your column as the Jack Peters, aka John Birnie Peters Jr, was my Papa (grandad).
“Jack worked most of his working career with DC Thomson before retiring as the gaffer in the reel store.
“My papa once told me a story of their time at Tannadice.
“He and another friend/player on Dundee United’s books had to climb over the fence or wall at Tannadice so they could train on the pitch themselves as they both worked night shift!
“I have tried but failed so far in my attempt to get a picture of my papa in a United top, and wondered if you could help.”
Unfortunately, our files did not reveal a photo of Jack in a United strip.
