Two-time world motor racing champion Emerson Fittipaldi has a largely unknown link with the city of Dundee.
My colleague James Masson explained: “Bill McMurdo is well known as a football agent, having represented George Best among others, but he was formerly on the commercial side at Timex in Dundee.
“As part of his job, he had to push the Timex brand as much as he could and, when Fittipaldi was ruling the roost in Formula One, Bill decided it would be a good idea to get him to endorse Timex watches.
“If my memory serves me correctly, Bill jetted out to Brazil to discuss the matter with Fittipaldi and his people managed to get him signed up to wear Timex watches.”
James went on: “I also was the proud wearer of a special Timex watch.
“It must have been around the early 80s when Scotland faced England in an amateur boxing international at Dundee’s Caird Hall.
“Dundonian Frank Hendry was the man in charge of Scottish amateur boxing affairs at the time and his elder brother, Jim, worked at Timex.
“Jim managed to have produced a beautiful set of watches for the participants and officials which featured the Scottish and English flags on the watch faces.
“I was fortunate enough to get one. They may well have been among the last custom-made watches made at Timex before the place closed.”
