Blether with Brown: John ‘best’ after just six months

George McDonald, now based in Shropshire: “I saw the feature you did on ice hockey player John Duffy on December 23 and I was sad to hear he had passed away in August.
“I played hockey with John for a while and we were close pals. I ended up playing down in Nottingham and over in Germany.
“John started playing hockey back in 1950 along with me for the Tiger Cubs but he stood out.
“John had been playing for only six months, yet the coach at the time, Walt McDonald, picked John out when The Sporting Post asked for the best young players for a feature.
“So there is an article from September 26, 1950, called ‘50 Angus boys chase a puck’, with a feature including John Duffy just as he started out.”
