Blether with Brown: Workhorse and barrel-chested

Davie Watson from Toronto sent in a photo of a team group from a Dundee Schoolboys trial match.

“I’m not too sure of all the names in the back line but I do know Bruce Malcolm and John Leddie are fourth and fifth in the back row,” said Davie.

“In the front row is myself, Alex McCarle, Peter Lorimer, Jimmy Finlayson and, last but not least, your fellow-DCT journalist Ron Scott.”

Ron is now retired from full-time working with the Sunday Post but still does a full Scottish Premiership match report every Saturday for the paper.

Davie was also tickled to read Duncan Fenwick’s recollection of the game in season 1959-60 when Dundee United won promotion to the top flight of Scottish Football (BwB, Dec 9 and Jan 6).

“I was also at that game and recall all the fans at the wooden clubhouse screaming for the players to come back out,” he recalled.

“I remember big Ron Yeats being right there, head held high.”

Davie continued on a sad theme.

“I am also saddened to read about some of the players Duncan played alongside have passed away,” he said.

“Podge Falconer, Billy Berrington and Frankie Strachan have now all left us.

“Podge (Falconer) was a great player.

“Billy was a workhorse and I also played against him in Toronto years ago and had a good battle with him that day.

“I also played many a game against St Francis winger Frankie with my Butterburn team.

“Duncan also mentioned Bobby Buchan.

“Again, I loved playing against Bobby with his barrel-chest. He took no nonsense.”
