Jimmy Ballie, of Maryfield, Dundee, replied to the photo of Dundee Violet juniors winning a trophy at Dens Park (BwB, Dec 2).
“It showed the team celebrating after winning the Forfarshire Cup in 1966,” he said.
“My dad Stewart Ballie played for Violet back then.
“I asked him why he wasn’t in the picture and he told me that he went over his ankle running out on to the park.
“It instantly swelled up, meaning he couldn’t play.
“Consequently, one of the Pansies’ committee members was sent up to Whites pub to get a replacement for him.
“It was Francey Kelly, I think, and he was drinking in there at the time.
“He also told me that Violet were 4-0 down at half-time but eventually won 5-4 with the young 16-year-old Martin scoring four second-half goals.
“The Jackie McGlashan in the picture is John McGlashan’s dad.”
The now-retired Bruce Ralston, former match secretary of the Midlands AFA, also gave some input regarding that Violet v Carnoustie final.
“I was at the game and I’m fairly sure a high-scoring contest ended something like 6-4 in Violet’s favour.
“The four-goal striker Martin was Philip Martin.
“He worked for DC Thomson in their Meadowside offices caseroom or stereo, I think.”
Les Lumb was also at the match.
“I remember being at that game and I’m sure the score was 5-4 to Violet,” said Les.
Ken Abbot, who gave the original story (December 2) about his dad hiding the cup under his bed for safekeeping, then forgetting all about it, has come on again from his home in Australia.
“Violet actually won three cups that year,” offered Ken, from Broken Hill in New South Wales.
“I’ve sent in a photo (above) of the full squad that year with committee members and the three cups won.
“One of the cups is, obviously, the Forfarshire Cup but I’m afraid I don’t know the names of the other two cups.
“My dad Sandy is fifth from left in the back row.”
BwB files reveal Violet’s other cup successes that particular season (1965-66) were the Loftus Cup and Kiddie Cup.
