Forever one to educate the masses, Andy Walker’s latest revelation is how Dixie Dean got his nickname.
“As a young boy growing up, his favourite game was ‘Digs’,” revealed Andy, from Lochee in Dundee.
“It is the same game we would call ‘Tig’ but the Liverpool version was called ‘Digs’.
“The only difference was that you had to use your elbows for a Tig.
“His nickname then was ‘Digsy’, heavily pronounced in the Liverpool dialect.
“When he started out early in his career the name stuck.
“However, when his early exploits on the field were being noticed by the Press, it was changed because the English Press wanted a name that would be noticed by all and that people would appreciate ‘Dixie’ better.”
