Blether with Brown: Sneaky-ins, ground staff working, Adamczuk’s leveller all memories

Blether with Brown: Sneaky-ins, ground staff working, Adamczuk’s leveller all memories

There were several responses to the photo of Dundee FC players of the 1950s training on the Provost Road steps a part of the Dens Park ground which is now permanently closed.

Bob Herring, all the way from Cape Town in South Africa, said: “The photo of the steps at the ‘Provie Road’ end brought back happy memories to me.

“I got a few sneaky-ins at that turnstile when I was a lad.

“Later on in life, I paid to walk up those steps many times.

“Now, at 71 years age, I was so sorry to see the state of that neck of the woods when I went there last year.

“They will probably get round to doing something with it in due course but where will they get the money from?

“It’s always good to read your column.”

Bob Wilson left a message to say he had a couple of school chums who signed for Dundee FC in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

However, he failed to mention their names.

“They signed for Dundee and part of their daily duties was sweeping the terracings and generally keeping Dens Park spick and span,” he said. “The steps at the side of the south enclosure, as shown in your photo, are currently a mess.

“In the close season, can fans’ groups not be invited to come in and lend a hand to tidy it up.”

Billy Reid remembers these steps, and offered: “I had just gone down the steps with a minute remaining of a game against Dundee United at Dens.

“We were trailing by a goal and it seemed all was lost.

“I had just reached the bottom when I heard this almighty roar and looked up to see the Dundee fans at the top celebrating.

“I think I ran up these stairs in record time to join in the celebrations for Dariusz Adamczuk’s equaliser.

“These steps also hold many other great memories for me.”

That particular game was in September 1998, and it was a last-minute equaliser from Adamczuk in a 2-2 draw in a Premier League match.

Dundee actually finished fifth in the league that season.

Denise Ross didn’t hold back.

“In reply to the Provost Road ‘eyesore’, this has been a disgrace since the 1960s,” she said.

“Surely someone could find the finance to make use of this area for both club and community.”
