The four Oscar-winning movie Chariots Of Fire has again recently been shown on TV.
And it brought back to mind for my sports desk colleague James Masson three local connections to the film.
He recalled: “At the time the film was being shot, I received a call from the locations director Ian Smith.
“I can’t remember if he told me they had managed to get a hold of Dundee heavy games athlete Grant Anderson to take part in the Highland Games scene in which we first see Eric Liddell or if he asked me if I could get any heavy games athletes for the scene.
“Anyway, Grant got the gig and is shown competing in that particular Highland Games scene which was shot in Glen Quaich at Amulree in Perthshire.
“The church service in the following scene was shot at Amulree Church of Scotland.
“The opening and closing of the film shows runners on the West Sands at St Andrews. In the film, it is depicted as the sands at Broadstairs in Kent but that scene was definitely filmed on St Andrews’ West Sands.”
Chariots Of Fire told the story of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, who both won gold medals for Britain at the 1924 Paris Olympics.
It highlighted the Christian stance of Eric Liddell never to run on a Sunday and the anti-Semitism Abrahams had to endure during his life.
