Dianne Robertson was able to confirm that the Dundee Strikers v Ayr Rebels match, as featured in BwB on October 14, was, indeed, a “grudge” match.
She confirmed: “The reason for the game being called a ‘grudge match’ is that the manager of Ayr Rebels was actually the man who started the Dundee Strikers team up.
“His name was Dave Cochrane and he wanted a challenge match against his old team. He arranged for us to play them and we won 14-1.
“I scored seven of our goals in that game.”
Dianne was in the photo but under her maiden name of D McLaren.
She continued: “The other question about the names is that the two names of M O’Neill is correct,
“Mary and Margaret O’Neill were sisters and both played for Strikers.
“Six of the girls in that picture played for Scotland Josie Cameron, Elizabeth Creamer, Mary O’Neill, Sharon Dobbie, Pat Robertson and myself.”
Charlie McDonagh also confirmed the O’Neill sisters’ first names.
“They were sisters Margaret and Mary, and they stayed at either 20 or 22 Eskdale Avenue, in West Kirkton, and I lived at No 3.
“They went to Kirkton High School.”
I had an inkling that former Dundee and Dundee United player Scott Robertson, now with Hibs, once said his mother played football.
I asked Dianne if Pat Robertson was his mother.
“No,” was Dianne’s answer, quickly stating: “Because I am!
The O’Neill sisters’ cousin Bob Hunter confirmed their names, and revealed that their mum May was the team manager at one point.
Bob, who now stays in Fintry but was originally from Kirkton, said: “I helped them out a wee bit every now and then.
“I even refereed some of their matches away from home.”
