Derek Rylance remains the only Arbroath player to net a hat-trick against Celtic, which came way back in 1972 when the Perth man completed his magical threesome in a League Cup tie at Hampden Park (because Celtic Park was being redeveloped).
Recently, Derek met up with my colleague James Masson at Perth Races and the subject immediately turned to that trio of Hampden goals which came in a 3-3 divide.
And Derek revealed his hat-trick was special in more ways than one. In fact, it was the perfect hat-trick.
“I scored one with my left foot, one with my right and the other with my head,” he said.
So not only is Derek the only Arbroath player to score a hat-trick against Celtic at Hampden but he’s probably one of the few Red Lichties to net the perfect hat-trick.
