Tom Black has offered some interesting stats involving Dundee FC.
“Dundee FC have a remarkable record for being involved in big crowd-pulling games,” offered Tom, of Lawside Road, Dundee.
“In 1896, Dundee played Corinthians at Crystal Palace and lost 3-1 in front of 60,000 spectators.
“This was a British record.
“In 1951, 91,075 saw them beat Rangers 3-2 at Hampden Park to win the League Cup.
“This was a new League Cup record and it stood for 12 years.
“The following year, 136,990 saw Dundee lose in the Scottish Cup Final to Motherwell at Hampden Park a record which has never been beaten.
On another subject, regular contributor Tom is bemused like many of us at Rangers’ lack of funds.
“Over half the clubs in the Scottish Premiership rarely draw above 4,000 Hamilton, Inverness CT, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone, Partick Thistle, Motherwell, St Mirren and Ross County,” he said.
“So why do Rangers need more funding to stay afloat in a lower league? Their wage bill is far greater than all the teams they played in the lower divisions in the past two years and none of them folded.
“However, there are the many millions in unpaid debts and taxes some of which is being disputed by the Ibrox club.
“It was suggested Scottish football wouldn’t survive if Rangers were relegated.
“They still command gates of over 30,000, so it is really a case of cutting their cloth to meet their needs.”
