Edinburgh resident Kevin Dakers tells me that he is a big sports fan and offers some suggestions for books with a Dundee connection.
“Two of my sporting heroes are boxer Dick McTaggart and the late professional wrestler world champion George Kidd,” said Kevin, of Abbey Street in Auld Reekie.
“My late dad would tell me all about George and how he enjoyed watching him on TV.
“Dick, of course, is a legend and I’ve seen films of his fights.
“What was good is the skill he used, which is true of George as well.”
Kevin recalled a very humorous moment regarding Kidd.
He continued: “Years ago, there was a quote from George where he was due to fight Jackie Pallo and he was told ‘Pallo is famous on TV’.
“George replied ‘so is OXO!’ It made me laugh.
“They were both great at their sports George and Dick and it would be great if someone wrote books about them.”
Football is another of Kevin’s favourite sports and he offered: “Scotland are improving with Gordon Strachan.
“However, the best Scotland team I ever saw was the 1974 World Cup squad managed by former St Johnstone manager Willie Ormond.
“Celtic will probably win the league, though I thought before the season started that Dundee United would finish second.
“It’s also good to see Dundee back in the top flight.
“Re Edinburgh football, Hearts should get up this season. As for Hibs, it may take another season.”
