Perth reader Richie McAlpine has been watching football for a very long time and is amused at what are considered new fads in the game.
“Folk think long throw-ins are a facet of the modern game but they’re not,” he said.
“As a laddie, I took the train down from Perth to Dundee to watch Dundee play Aberdeen at Dens during World War Two.
“It may have been a Dewar Shield match and Dundee’s legendary George ‘Pud’ Hill, despite being a wee fella, could throw the ball enormous distances.
“Pud could throw the ball past the penalty spot and that caused big problems that day for the Aberdeen defence.
“Albert Juliussen played for Dundee that day, too, but I can’t recall the score.
“Maybe some other BwB reader can help out with this information.”
Richie recalls another wartime game at Dens in which Pud Hill played.
“It was a match between Dundee and the British Army,” he continued.
“Rueben Bennett, later to be part of the famous Liverpool boot room with Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Ronnie Moran and Roy Evans, was in goal for Dundee with Reggie Smith also playing for them.
“The great Frank Swift of Manchester City and England fame and Scotland’s first ever manager, Archie Macaulay, were in the Army side.
“Again, the score escapes me but maybe some other BwB readers can help.”
