Blether with Brown: Champagne not allowed on team bus
ByJohn Brown
This picture evokes happy memories for my colleague James Masson, a long-time St Johnstone man.
It shows the celebrations among the Saints fans after Andy Brannigan had netted the winner in their game away to Alloa, the victory which ensured the Perth men of promotion to the Premier League in season 1982-83.
They won the title, beating Hearts who finished as runners-up.
James recalled: “The picture was taken by Louis Flood Jr who just happened to have taken the champagne through to the game in his car.
“Alex Rennie, the St Johnstone team boss, was so superstitious he didn’t want the champagne on the team bus. So Louis was given the task of taking it through and handing it over after Saints had won the game and the title.
“The picture shows the ball in the back of the net after Andy Brannigan had netted the winner and the Saints fans celebrating. One of them has obviously celebrated too much and is being ‘huckled’ by a policeman.
“And, if my memory serves me correctly, one of the St Johnstone supporters was a guy who was married earlier on that day but left the wedding party to come to the game before rejoining his bride and guests.”
