Well-known football figure Allan Smart was one of those paying tribute to Davie Allan, who, sadly, passed away a few weeks ago.
Davie was a familiar figure on the Perth sporting scene, having refereed for many years. He was also secretary of Perth Bowling Club for 25 years.
Allan recalled: “The first game of competitive football I played outwith schools football was for the Tay Thistle City Boys side.
“I was 14 at the time. I can’t recall who we played but we won 8-2 or 9-2 and I netted four goals.
“Davie wasn’t that much older than me but he was the ref, having taken up refereeing early.
“I will never forget what he said to me at the end of that game.
“He told me I had done well and he would have a word with Hibs about me as he knew someone connected with them.
“I never did get a call from Easter Road but, given that John Binnie and Dusty Moir went from Perth under-age football to Hibs, I reckon Davie must have had a hand in their moves.
“I found Davie to be very honest and kind, not just that day but on others as well.
“He told me he became a referee as he didn’t think he was good enough to become a player.
“I met him many times over the years and enjoyed a yarn with him about the old days and about the time I scored four for Tay Thistle.”
