Peter Quinn was tickled to see the photo of Lochee Renton in BwB in August.
The Renton picture was handed in by John McNaughton after he found it among others lying in the ‘vaults’ of the Logie Club in Liff Road, Dundee.
“That photo of Lochee Renton was taken at the location where The Planet Bar is now situated in Lochee,” revealed Peter. “Renton came about when two teams amalgamated Lochee Vics, who I played for and Glentoran.
“That 1964 team was a great side, winning everything domestically but losing in the Scottish Juvenile Cup Final to Roseberry Juveniles.
“The team the following year (1965) went one better and won the Scottish.
“They came up against Arbroath Sports Club and beat them 5-3 over both legs for a 10-6 aggregate scoreline.
“The first leg was at Gayfield and Renton came back from 3-1 down. The second leg was at Lochee United’s Thomson Park.”
Peter then revealed the following year was not too successful for Renton in the national competition.
“They were actually put out in the first round in the 65-66 season by Dundee rivals Maryfield United,” continued Peter, who now stays in Lyndhurst Terrace after quite a number of years in Birkhill.
“Maryfield, though, went on to win the cup, with the final being played at North End Park.”
It was back to normal the following year, though, as Peter continued: “Renton won the trophy again in 1967 against Rutherglen.
“They won the first leg 4-1 at Thomson Park but lost the away second leg 2-0.”
Going back to the 1965 team, Peter rattled off the line-up.
“Renton made just two changes to their regular line-up from the team which was beaten in 64 to the team which triumphed in 65,” he recalled.
“The 65 team was (in the old 2-3-5 formation): Higgins; McKenzie, Dougan; Barry, Callaghan, Black; Clark, Thoms, Kelly, McAuley, Jack.
“1965 emerged a great year locally as NCR brought a second national trophy to Lochee the Scottish Amateur Cup.
“A ‘Champion of Champions’ game was arranged between the sides at North End Park, which ended 3-3.”
Jimmy Jack, of course, went on to sign for Arbroath FC and ended up a legend with the Gayfield club.
Peter also recalled an amusing line.
He said: “After losing the first Scottish final to Roseberry in Glasgow, committee man George Dickson went into the winning dressing-room after the game.
“He asked to borrow the cup for a few minutes and this was granted. He then took the trophy back to the Renton dressing-room and said: ‘This is what the cup looks like. We will win it next year!’
“And they did.”
