Well-known local former goalkeeper Dave Tosney can’t make up his mind which was the better feeling . . . winning a British championship or seeing a colour TV for the first time.
Former Lawside Academy pupil Dave was my team-mate during Auchterhouse AFC’s great run in the 1970s and he also played for several Saturday and Sunday amateur clubs, in addition to a few junior excursions.
But it was as a young Lochee Boys Club player that his BwB tale evolves.
“In season 1970-71, two Lochee Boys Club U/18 teams qualified for the final of the Scottish Association of Boys Clubs five-a-sides,” said Dave.
“My team were actually beaten in the final, with the winners heading down to Bingham, near Nottingham, for the British final.
“The other Lochee team’s keeper Jimmy Nisbett then got injured, so Willie Grier drafted me in.
“So I actually got to the final by the back door.
“The finals day down there was played in a league format and, in between games, we would rush through to a lounge to watch the FA Cup Final.
“It was the day Arsenal striker Charlie George scored in the 2-1 extra-time win against Liverpool at Wembley and celebrated by lying flat out on his back.
“Not only that, though, it was also the first time I had ever seen a colour TV and, wow, I thought it was brilliant.
“Winning the championship just capped off a great day.
“It was deemed quite a big thing at the time and, indeed, we were given a civic reception by the Dundee City Council.”
