My colleague James Masson has been taking more than a passing interest in the recent BwB articles regarding the 14-2 Rangers home Scottish Cup victory over Blairgowrie in 1934.
The game remains the Ibrox club’s biggest win and nine of their goals that day were netted by Jimmy Fleming, a man who knew the Blairgowrie area very well.
That was because Jimmy had joined Rangers from St Johnstone, one of a great many players to make that particular journey, including Tommy Cairns, Alex MacDonald and Ally McCoist, all of whom went on to Scotland caps and great fame.
Jimmy holds the record for the most Scottish Cup goals scored by a Rangers player (44) and his nine against Blair is the most goals netted by a Rangers player in one match.
Jimmy was a favourite both on and off the park.
A committed born-again Christian and teetotaller, he spoke at temperance meetings in various places. Even after his transfer to Rangers, he came back to Perth to speak at Fair City temperance events.
The fact he won only three Scotland caps is testimony to the fact Scotland had a lot of good centre-forwards at the time.
In fact, he scored three times for his country, his three goals in three games ratio being a decent return.
That personal scoring spree against Blairgowrie was one of his last acts for Rangers as his nine-year stint with them ended that year.
He died, aged 66, in 1969. Though he is long gone, his records still stand and may do for ever.
