Perth reader Ritchie McAlpine remembered going to a game at Tannadice in the 1940s.
He asked this column for help in identifying the score when Dundee United met Birmingham City that day.
Reader Brian Kelly came on to offer a 9-2 scoreline.
I asked Dundee United historian Peter Rundo if he could give me more details about this game and he thinks Brian may have two different games mixed up.
“Dundee United played Birmingham City on April 12, 1948,” said Peter.
“However the score was 5-1 to the English side, with former Raith player Jackie Stewart scoring for Birmingham, in addition to a hat-trick from Falkirk-born Neil Dougall.
“The 9-2 game was the defeat against Newcastle United on October 5, 1949.”
John Shaw, from Elder’s Court in Dundee, also confirmed the Birmingham fixture and result.
“Dundee United v Birmingham City was a friendly played as part of the deal that took Tannadice youngster Frank McKee to City earlier in that 1947-48 season.
“The game was played on the Spring Bank holiday and City won 5-1.
“They were obviously a good team and, indeed, went on to win the English Second Division championship that season.
“I understand a crowd of over 10,000 attended.
“Furthermore, it may have been the first friendly United played against English opposition at Tannadice.
“Keep on with your great column.”
Cowdenbeath-born Frank McKee signed for United from junior side Lochgelly Albert.
He played just 18 games for United before Birmingham snapped him up.
After three years at St Andrew’s, he joined Gillingham in 1952.
His grandson Jaimes Anthony McKee is a Hong Kong-English footballer a striker who plays for Sun Pegasus.
He was the top scorer of Hong Kong Senior Shield in the 2006-07 season and the Hong Kong First Division League top scorer in 2012-13.
