Blether with Brown: ‘Can you find anything on Brechin United, pal?’
ByJohn Brown
Enjoying an early evening refreshment in a Broughty Ferry hostelry, I was approached by a patron.
The conversation was as swift as this . . . “Can you find anything on Brechin United, pal?”
“I asked what the connection was and, as he walked away (and kept on walking), he shouted back: “My dad used to play for them.”
He then walked out of the door and there has been no correspondence or sighting since.
I hadn’t heard of a junior team called Brechin United, so reckon they must have been an amateur outfit.
Then, bingo, our files unearthed this photo, and it shows they were very successful at least for the 1960-61 season.
United are pictured above from July 1961 with quite an array of silverware.
They won five trophies in that particular season Forfarshire Cup, Express Cup, Kerr Cup, Newgate Cup and the Lindsay Trophy.
Back row (from left) Thomson, G Jolly, Kay, Hughes, Morrison, Murray, S Jolly, McCourty. Front row Greig, Farquhar, Gray, Jack Love (manager), McKinney, Hampton, Forbes.
If anyone can take this Brechin tale further, please get in touch.
