Dave Edmonds used to score goals for fun at several levels in Scottish football, having been signed by Dunfermline Athletic, then turning out for Carnoustie Panmure juniors for many years.
But, 23 years ago, he turned his back on the Gowfers and the beautiful game and took up the sport of ice hockey, both coaching and playing.
His son Steve said: “A group of us started a recce side called ‘Davie’s Joiners’, which ran for around two years until the old ‘back’ rink closed.
“We were forced to train elsewhere Fife, Livingston, Glenrothes, Perth alongside the boys from the Michelin, and it was then that Dundee Michelin was formed.
“With my dad as player/coach, we won a number of tournaments, including two British Recce Championships in Telford in 97 and 99.”
Dave continued running the bench for Michelin recce side but stepped aside from the coaching role around nine years ago and began coaching the Stars juniors.
He has on a number of occasions returned to help out at Michy and his guidance earlier this season finally saw the club lift the coveted Scottish Recreational Cup after their eighth time in the final.
Son Steve played a part in his side’s 3-0 win over Irvine Flyers.
Dave, an amiable guy, is head coach at U/10s with the Dundee Stars Junior Development and has been head coach with Scotland U/11s since 2009.
He has two grandsons playing at the highest level in the game.
Ben is starring for the national squad’s U/17 age group and narrowly missed out on a GB call-up, and Jamie made the reserve list for the U/11 squad.
