Blether with Brown: ‘On yer bike’ was way to see match
ByJohn Brown
Perth reader Ritchie McAlpine is wondering whether anyone can give him information about a friendly game he attended at Tannadice Park in the 1940s.
Ritchie is a well-known supporter of amateur football in the Perth area but he also takes an interest in the senior game.
He recalled: “Myself and Billy Doris were message laddies for a period in the 1940s, me with Lindsay the butcher and Billy with Leiper the grocer.
“One day, Dundee United were playing Birmingham City in a friendly at Tannadice and we decided to cycle all the way from Perth to Dundee and back just to see the game.
“When we got to Tannadice, we put our bikes under some bushes and set off to watch the action before collecting the bikes after the game and cycling all the way back to Perth.
“I don’t remember the score, so perhaps someone can help me out.”
