“Good photo of Dundee Schoolboys U/15s from 1967,” was Sy Thomson’s opening line after seeing the team in our June 10 issue.
“I recognised most of the guys.
“Picking up on your comment that three of them lived near each other in the same street in Douglas, another three players in that team stayed very near each other in St Mary’s.
“Ian Macdonald (St John’s), Charlie Brown and Cliff Wasiac (both Kirkton High School) all lived in (or near) St Fillans Road.
“Also, where was that team photo taken?
“If that’s the changing rooms in the background, they look a bit dilapidated.”
I haven’t a clue where that photo was taken but perhaps a reader, or even the players themselves, can come on and reveal the location.
Frankie Campbell was one of the ‘Balerno Street Three’ and he, too, responded.
“I’ve got vivid memories of that U/15 schoolsboys team,” opened Frankie, who, even at around 60 years of age, is still refereeing minor fixtures in Dundee and the surrounding area.
“Jim Chaplain, the Lawside gym teacher, picked that team and he had me playing left-wing instead of my usual right-back position.
“Also, Cliff Wasiak was up front at centre-forward instead of in his usual centre-half spot.
“It must have worked, though, because we won a couple of games before being knocked out of the inter-schools trophy.”
