Rory McLeod, of Strathbeg Place, Broughty Ferry, is unimpressed by the feat of Miroslav Klose, of Germany, equalling Brazilian Ronaldo’s overall total of 15 goals in this year’s World Cup in Brazil.
“As usual, there have been many discussions on various forums this year, including best goal so far, team of the tournament, &c,” said Rory.
“The question of the top scorer in World Cup history inevitably came up when Klose equalled Ronaldo’s overall total of 15 in this year’s tournament although it took him four tournaments to do so.
“What seems to have been forgotten is that the striker who scored most goals in one tournament was Just Fontaine (France), who scored a remarkable 13 goals in only six games in the 1958 World Cup.
“Brazil’s Pele and Helmut Rahn (West Germany scored ‘only’ six in that tournament.
“Although the 1958 tournament tends to be remembered for Pele’s goal in the final against Sweden, the winner of the Golden Ball for the best player that year was, in fact, Brazilian midfielder Didi.
“Pele received the Silver Ball and Fontaine picked up the Bronze Ball for second and third-best player.”
