Blether with Brown: Rangers v Blairgowrie score was 10-0… ‘who for?’

Blether with Brown: Rangers v Blairgowrie score was 10-0… ‘who for?’

Charlie Walker, of Lochee, Dundee, disputes Tom Alexander’s version of “Two’s up and the ba’s burst”, as featured back in May.

“I’m sorry to disappoint Tom, who was a former workmate of mine with Kestrel Marine,” he opened, apologetically. “The statement ‘Two’s up and the ba’s burst’ first came about on Lochee Park during a game involving Lochee Harp and St Patrick’s.

“With the score at 2-2, the ball burst and, as no other ball was available, the match was abandoned.

“Lochee Harp fanatic Tommy Glass was leaving the ground and met a latecomer coming in, who asked: ‘How’s the game going?’

“Tommy replied: ‘It was twa’s up and the ba’ got burst’.

“Years later, another like statement was spouted locally . . . ‘three’s up and the ba’s on the slates’.”

Charlie remembered another game where a latecomer came away with a good line.

He continued: “In the early days of the Beautiful Game, the mighty Glasgow Rangers paid a visit to Blairgowrie and won 10-0 against the local team.

“As the crowd were coming out, a young farmer lad had just finished his shift and asked: ‘What was the score?’

“On hearing it 10-0, he asked: ‘Who for?’

“This still gives many a laugh when it is talked about.”
