Blether with Brown: Dundee legend Alan Gilzean endorses new signing

Possible confirmation of the two Unknowns in the Dundee FC cricket team came from no less than one of the Dens Park club’s living legends.

To refresh, our May 27 issue had several Dark Blues in their cricketing whites for a friendly against Coupar Angus, and most of the players in the team were named except two.

Alan Gilzean, even given his 75 years and the fact the game was exactly 50 years ago this month (July), remembered that Dundee won the match.

He named the players as possibly David Duncan (at the back) and David Davidson at the front.

“That photo was taken in Coupar Angus with the Forfar Road in the background,” said Alan, who, of course, hails from the Perthshire town.

“I remember we won the match by 15 runs.”

Former Tottenham and Scotland striker Alan also gave a great endorsement to one of current manager Paul Hartley’s new signings.

“I see Dundee have signed Kevin Thomson,” he said.

“He is a very good football player and is one whose career I have watched closely in recent years.”

Asked why Thomson was the subject of Gillie scrutiny, the 22-times capped striker explained: “When Thomson was capped for Scotland, my grandson Cameron was a mascot for one of the internationals at Hampden.

“Thomson took his hand and led him out on to the park and generally looked after him for that wee spell.

“I’ve just followed his career since then to see how he has got on, and have seen him play on TV several times.

“I believe this is a very good signing for Dundee.”

Going back to the Unknowns, Clark McConnachie replied on Twitter that the player at the back might be former Meigle player Sandy Pattullo.
