Blether with Brown: Jimmy is seeking cup final details

Jimmy Ballie, of Dundee, reminisces about an U/18 Scottish Cup Final, in which he played.

“I was wondering if BwB could uncover any details of the all-Dundee U/18 Scottish Cup Final played at Glenesk Park between Celtic Boys (for whom I played in goal) and Fintry Boys,” he asked.

“As I was born in 1962, the game was, I think, at the end of the 1978-79 season.

“The first game, played in midweek at Glenesk Park, finished, I think, in a 3-3 draw, with Fintry equalising with almost the last kick of the game.

“The replay was again on Violet’s ground, where Fintry beat us 4-3.

“We were a team put together in the U/18s by Wullie Donaldson, after Celtic lost most of their successful team after their U/16 season.

“There were maybe six players left from the team which came through the age groups and the rest of us.”

Jimmy, of Maryfield, continued: “We had a brilliant run in the Scottish, beating two Aberdeen sides after the local rounds.

“We then beat Jeanfield from Perth 2-0 at St Joseph’s ground (Fairfield Park) in the semis in a midweek game, then met Fintry in the final.

“It would be great if BwB readers could come up with any details of any of the two games because I’ve no team photos and can’t remember most of the goalscorers.”
