Blether with Brown: Olympic standard runner

Jim Hutton, of Arklay Street, Dundee, tells me he is an avid reader of BwB.

“I read BwB every week and often wonder what happened to many of the players in the old photos,” said Jim.

“The recent Fairfield Juveniles photo featured Eddie McAulay and Arthur Smith, both former team-mates and old friends of mine.

“I know that Eddie, sadly, has passed away but I have not heard anything about Arthur for a long time.

“It would be good to get an update on him.

“I remember Arthur’s father as being a runner of Olympic standard.”

Jim, a former Butterburn Youth Club player, then proceeded to inform me how the Fairies started up.

“It was a breakaway of players from Butterburn,” he revealed.

“I, though, stayed with the Burn but many of my team-mates went to Fairfield.”

I asked Jim if he played junior at any time and he replied: “Gosh, I think I played for every local junior side except Carnoustie!”
