Blether with Brown: Tele sponsor Scottish amateur cup
ByJohn Brown
Denis Leitch tells me he is doing some research into his family history and would like assistance from BwB.
“I find that my great grandfather David Hutchison Leitch, from St Andrews, competed in a Scottish Amateur Cup,” he opens. “This was called the Telegraph Cup, sponsored by the Dundee Evening Telegraph newspaper. I think he reached the semi-finals in 1896 and was also a runner-up (year unknown). Is it possible to have any details regarding this event or a list of winners/runners-up each year?
“My grandfather lived from 1858-1935.”
I haven’t heard of the Telegraph Cup being played for in amateurs, and the junior version was first sponsored by this newspaper in season 1901-02 when Edenbank won it.
We don’t, as a newspaper, keep stats of cup competitions we sponsor. However, if any BwB reader knows anything of this competition in amateur form, then get in touch.
