Blether with Brown: Most definitely not a Smart move to call him Smith

The photo of Riverside Athletic and story about Ronnie Mitchell received a decent response but several readers pointed a mistaken identity.

Alex Smart’s brother Ian left a message to say it was him and not D Smith as in the caption.

Another was my former team-mate at Douglas Amateurs, Jim Aberdein.

Jim, a good midfielder in his day with an eye for a 30-yard strike at goal, said: “You have named a player wrong in the Riverside photo.

“Next to John Strachan is actually my great late pal Alex Smart and not D Smith as you have mentioned in your clip.

“However, you are bang on about Ronnie Mitchell.

“I had the pleasure of playing alongside him with Riverside and also the Angus Select team.

“Your page continues to be great. Keep up the good work.”

Jim keeps in touch with his lifelong friend and team-mate Frankie Barker, who is in Canada.

Jim asked if I had a photo of Frankie during his Bank Street Athletic days but I can’t source one.

However, I did pick out Frankie when I was going through old Dundee schools football team photos.

This is the St Columba’s Boys Club U/16 squad who took part in a European Youth tournament at Celtic Park, Glasgow, in April 1973. Back row (from left) G Regan, P Donnelly, A Boath, E Scrimgeour, D Ellis, D Mitchell. Front row B Glennie, A Kidd, F Barker, K Boyle, R Thomson, J Anderson.

Prominent names are Alan Boath, who featured quite recently in BwB, and former Dundee FC team-mates Bobby Glennie and Albert Kidd.

Some of the others also had stints in the senior grade, while most of the others went on to have good careers in the juniors.
