Tom Black reckons he seldom answers more than one or two questions from “It’s Quiz Time” the Tele sports quiz featured every Friday.
“The one asking ‘How many Grand Slam tennis titles did Rod Laver win?’ reminded me of watching him on TV way back in the 1960s,” said Tom, of Lawside Road, Dundee.
“That was on black and white TV.
“Just asking how many titles Rod won is an injustice.
“Rod won the Grand Slam in 1962 when all Grand Slam tournaments were amateurs only.
“He then turned professional.
“In 1968, professionals were allowed back into tennis and Rod won Wimbledon and then, in 1969, he won another Grand Slam.
“No other male player won with a span of eight years between his first and last Slam wins.
“Only Donald Budge did the Grand Slam in its true form… all four tournaments in the same year!”
