Blether with Brown: Should’ve played at a higher level

I popped down to Dundee FC’s recent whisky-tasting evening in The Fort, Broughty Ferry, where those in attendance had the chance to sample the new Alan Gilzean whisky.

It was a good evening for a chat among the lads, too.

One of those present was Ronnie Mitchell, who doesn’t hide his passion for the Dens Park club.

Ronnie was actually quite a player himself and it is a mystery to me why senior clubs did not come calling for him when he was bagging goal after goal for Riverside Athletic in the old Angus Amateur AFA in the 1970s.

Ronnie was, quite simply, a goal machine with a terrific turn of pace.

He modestly just shrugged off some of my complimentary comments about his success back then.

So, it was into the files for me on my return to the office, and I’ve come up with this photo of Riverside with the fruits of their labours from the 1977-78 Angus Amateur AFA season.
